What Can You See on the Mojiko Waterfront? Blue Wing Moji, Norfolk Square and the Strait

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who have seen the old buildings of Mojiko and want to spend time by the water, where the Kanmon Strait is narrow and ships pass close. It uses the English pages of the Kanmon area tourism site, run by Kitakyushu City and Shimonoseki City, and the Fukuoka prefectural travel guide. We read the pages on 2026-10-04. The Kanmon area pages carry a 2021 copyright notice, so check hours and times before you go.

Why the strait matters

The Kanmon Strait connects the Sea of Hibiki on the Japan Sea side and the Sea of Suo on the Seto Inland Sea side. The site calls it a long, narrow passage known to be difficult to pass through. The Mojiko side faces Shimonoseki across the water, and the two cities promote the area together. The Kanmon-kaikyo Raibu-kan on the second floor of Marine Gate Moji, a free exhibition open 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Wednesdays, shows the strait in real time through cameras at three points and lets visitors try a ship-steering simulation.

Blue Wing Moji

Blue Wing Moji is a 108-metre drawbridge for pedestrians only, described as one of the longest of its kind. It is raised to 60 degrees to the water six times a day, at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. After each raising the bridge stays closed for 20 minutes. The site says it is a "Lovers' Sanctuary", because it is believed that the first couple to cross after the bridge is lowered will be united in marriage. It adds that the bridge is lit at night, with the surrounding buildings. The bridge is about three minutes' walk from JR Mojiko Station.

Norfolk Square and the seaside promenade

Norfolk Square is described as an ideal spot for watching the strait, passing ships and the Kanmon Bridge. It is named after Norfolk, Virginia, with which Kitakyushu has a friendship agreement. Benches face the water, and the site says that at sunset, or at night when the bridge and Shimonoseki across the strait are lit, the view is more romantic. It stands a short walk from Norfolk Square Station on the Kitakyushu Retro Line, the tourist train known as the Shiokaze-go.

The seaside promenade starts at Norfolk Square and runs about 900 metres to Mekari Shiokaze Hiroba, at the foot of the Kanmon Bridge. The sea wall is built from natural granite stacked in steps, and the site says it gives a close view of ships coming and going.

The view from 103 metres

The Mojiko Retro Observation Room shows the strait and the retro district from 103 metres, according to the prefectural guide. It is open from 10:00 to 22:00 (last order 21:30), with irregular closures, and the entry price is not listed on that page.

Legends and shrines near the water

The Kanmon area site links the strait with the Battle of Dannoura in the twelfth century between the Minamoto and Taira clans. It describes the "Heike no Ippai-mizu", or "a mouthful of water of the Taira clan", a spot on the Shimonoseki side where a legend says an injured Taira warlord drank fresh water and then salt water on reaching the shore. It also describes Akama-jingu Shrine, dedicated to Emperor Antoku, who leaped into the sea in that battle. Fresh water from the spring is drawn on the morning of New Year's Day and offered to the deity.

Crossing to the other side

The Kanmon area site's recommended walking tour on the Shimonoseki side takes in old buildings and views of the strait, including Kameyama Hachimangu Shrine and Karato Market, and it starts and ends at Shimonoseki Station. We did not find opening hours or fares for it on the pages we read, so check them locally.

Cycling the waterfront

The site recommends rental power-assisted bicycles from JOYiNT Mojiko, 800 yen a day, because a cycling road runs between the retro area and Norfolk Square. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00, or to 17:00 from November to March.
