How Do You Get to Mojiko Retro from Fukuoka, Kokura and the Airports?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach the Mojiko Retro district in Kitakyushu, at the northern tip of Kyushu, and plan how to get around it once there. It uses the Japanese access page of the district's official information office, the English page of the Fukuoka prefectural travel guide and the English pages of the Kanmon area tourism site run by Kitakyushu City and Shimonoseki City. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Timetables and prices change, so confirm them on the day.

The short answer

The information office says Mojiko Retro is reached by JR Kyushu, and the Fukuoka prefectural guide says the area is directly outside JR Mojiko Station. Most visitors change at Kokura Station, the main station of Kitakyushu, onto a train for Mojiko. The Kanmon area site says to get off at JR Mojiko Station for the station building, the old brick buildings and the waterfront.

From Hakata and Fukuoka Airport

The information office gives these routes and times, translated from its Japanese page:

From Kitakyushu Airport

The page says to take the Kitakyushu Airport Bus "Kokura Station Non-stop Bus" and get off at the Shinkansen exit of JR Kokura Station, which takes 33 minutes. From there a train to Mojiko takes 15 minutes.

By ferry

The page lists three ferry lines that sail to Shin-Moji: one from Osaka Nanko (Meimon Taiyo Ferry), one from Kobe and Izumiotsu, and one from Tokyo via Tokushima. For the first two, a free shuttle bus run by the ferry company takes about 20 minutes to JR Moji Station. For the Tokyo line, a shared taxi runs for 310 yen per person, also about 20 minutes. From JR Moji Station it is 7 minutes by train to Mojiko Station.

By car and parking

The Fukuoka prefectural guide says there are about 1,100 paid parking spaces around the retro area, including 40 for buses. The information office also publishes a parking map with prices as of June 2022, which it says to check against each lot's own site or signs. As an example, it lists the Kaikyo Plaza lot at 400 yen for 60 minutes with a maximum of 4,000 yen for 10 to 24 hours, and smaller coin lots with daily maximums from 440 to 1,100 yen. Use these only as a guide because they are old.

Getting around the district

The Kanmon area site recommends power-assisted rental bicycles at JOYiNT Mojiko, about six minutes' walk from the station. It lists 800 yen for a day, hours from 10:00 to 18:00 (to 17:00 from November to March), and a well-kept cycling road between the retro area and Norfolk Square. Most of the main buildings are two to eight minutes' walk from JR Mojiko Station according to the site, so many visitors simply walk.

The same site says the train station itself is part of the visit. The Mojiko Station building was finished in 1914, a Western-style two-story wooden building and the first station building in Japan designated by the national government as an important cultural property. Outside the ticket gate on the north side of the platform, the remains of the passage to the Kanmon ferry pier are preserved. The ferry ran between Shimonoseki and Mojiko from 1901 to 1964, a service of 63 years.
